赤頸鷺鷈是游泳及潛水高手。

達人語：
整台北市野鳥學會總幹事何一先說，赤頸鷿鷈（鷿鷈音同闢啼）身體像鴨子，但較肥胖，棲息於沼澤、池塘、湖泊地帶，以魚類，昆蟲為主食。牠們的腳位於腹部後端，是游泳及潛水高手，起飛時會先在水面助跑才飛得起來，飛行時，頸、腳伸直，成直線飛行。
赤頸鷿鷈在非繁殖期時寂靜無聲、不會鳴唱，但一到繁殖築巢期就會變得十分喧鬧。

◎體形：體長約45公分
◎特徵：黑頭白臉頰，栗紅色頸，短尾羽
