美國官員16日表示，為保護美方在伊拉克利益不受暴亂侵擾，政府將調度大約275名軍人保護大使館，並且正在考慮是否派出特種部隊。白宮再度強調，美方不會派出戰鬥部隊，把自己丟進另一場伊拉克戰爭。

目前伊拉克已經有大約160名美軍，包含50名海軍陸戰隊與100多名陸軍。一名美國官員說，將在附近第三國部署100個士兵，以備不時之需。
