哥斯大黎加以經典的防反和敢於強隊硬碰硬的氣勢，不僅提前小組出線，也贏得了球迷的尊敬。然而國際足總FIFA對他們的突然爆發感到不可理解，以至在擊敗義大利賽後，有多達7名哥斯大黎加球員接受了尿檢。

首戰烏拉圭，哥斯大黎加便爆出冷門，3：1擊敗上屆世界盃殿軍。次戰義大利，哥斯大黎加延續奇幻之旅，魯伊斯（Bryan Ruiz）的頭球，幫助球隊全取3分，在提前出線的同時，也讓同組對手英格蘭的徹底出局。

按常規，FIFA一般只會在尿檢中抽查2到3名球員，義大利只有兩名球員受檢，然而國際足總卻對哥斯大黎加「痛下殺手」，抽檢了包括魯伊斯、納瓦斯（Keylor Navas）、博格斯（Celso Borges）、坎具爾（Joel Campbell）、特耶德（Yeltsin Tejeda）、博拉諾斯（Christian Bolanos）、巴倫提斯（Michael Barrantes）等7名球員。
