公路缺經費 白宮要求准許州際公路收費

為避免今夏發生運輸經費短缺危機，白宮已指示運輸部向國會提出要求，促其終止現行禁令，允許各州政府向現有的州際公路(interstate highway)收通行費，藉以增加維修公路經費。此舉將使數十年來籌措公路經費的方式產生重大改變。

根據現行禁令，各州政府只准在增闢新車道時，才能在其境內州際公路收通行費。但目前出現嚴重困境，許多州及聯邦政府欠缺經費，拓寬和重建現有州際公路陳舊路段都無錢可用。

運輸部長福克斯說，聯邦「公路信託基金」將在8月現金用罄，大多數州將因此受害。業界組織「美國公路與運輸營造商協會」說，31州過半公路與橋樑的改善，依賴聯邦經費。

「公路信託基金」，主要依賴每加侖汽油徵收18.4分汽油稅，但因汽車愈來愈省油，基金收入大幅腐蝕。
